Intimate Partner Violence Research
Dr. Pertice Moffitt , Heather Fikowski, and community partner Lyda Fuller, YWCA, are Co-Investigators in a $1 million SSHRC grant for "Rural and Northern Response to Intimate Partner Violence (2011-2016)" with Dr. Mary Hampton , Luther College/University of Regina, Principal Investiagator and a Collaborative team from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Eighteen academic researchers and 15 community partners comprise the CURA research team. The project will bring together researchers from universities in each of the three Praire provinces and the NWT and coapplicants, collaborators and partners including governmental justice, social services, and shelters.
The SSHRC funding is avaialble through the Community-University Reseach Alliance (CURA) program and will support research investigating intimate partner violence in the Praire provinces and the Northwest Territories. Little data is available about rural and northern communities' incidence of intimate partner violence, and as a result, resources that respond to this social problem or knowledge of how to improve community responses to imtimate partner violence are poor.
The methods that we will use to conduct this research project are extremely important. Through community-based research, we take our lead from the communities we partner with research questions that they need addressed regarding intimate partner violence and develop solutions that policy makers and community members themselves can implement to end intimate partner violence in northern and rural communities.
Moffitt and Fikowski: Successful Recipients of Complementary Funding Grant ($15,000) from Nasivvik Centre for Inuit Health and Changing Environments
Dr. Moffitt and Heahter Fikowski were also successful in their application for this funding to assist with the Intimate Partner Violence research. The money will complement the research being conducted in the NWT by training and mentoring Northern students.
