The South Slave Research Centre in Fort Smith is located on the west bank of the Slave River at the NWT/Alberta border, home of the Wood Buffalo National Park headquarters. The community of approximately 2,364 residents (2006 Census) is accessible by both road and air (via Northwestern Air). The centre is located directly within Thebacha Campus of Aurora College.
The South Slave Research Centre is able to provide office space for use by researchers, shared laboratory space, geomatics support, access to Thebacha Campus Library, wireless internet access and limited storage. The centre can also carry out contractual research and/or assist in the hiring of local research assistants.
The centre can also act as liaison between researchers and various community organizations, government departments, and aboriginal organizations.
The centre conducts research as requested by the community and has been successful in delivering training in several communties across the Northwest Territories.
