James M. Harrison Bursary

Dedication
This award is in memory of Dr. James Harrison, C.C., the founding chairman of the Board of Governors of the Science Institute of the Northwest Territories.


Objective
The objective of the bursary is to assist a student from the Northwest Territories to obtain an education in the natural sciences to be applied to future work in the Northwest Territories.


Eligibility
Selection is based upon future aspirations of the applicant for a career within the Northwest Territories, academic record, and financial need.

  1. Applicants must be entering a) graduate school or b) fourth year, or c) third year of undergraduate studies as a full-time student in the natural sciences at a Canadian university or college or the University of Alaska. At least two complete years of undergraduate training with demonstrated achievement must be completed before applying. Priority will be given to universities and colleges with a native studies program.
  2. Applicants must have been resident in the Northwest Territories for at least five years.
  3. Applicants must show a demonstrated interest in preparation for a career in the Northwest Territories.
  4. A recipient may apply for a second award of the bursary if a satisfactory record of achievement has been maintained. Approval for one year does not automatically constitute approval for the second year. Such applications will be considered at the same time as other applications.
  5. Applicants on paid education leave are not eligible.
  6. The bursary will not be awarded every year if there is not a satisfactory applicant.

Bursary
The bursary is currently valued at $2,000. The award will be distributed with one cheque for one half of the full amount in September and a second cheque for one half of the full amount in January. If the student does not attend university or ceases to attend during the academic year, the bursary or unissued portion of the bursary reverts to the Aurora Research Institute. The applicant may be required to provide a financial statement of revenue and budget.


Deadline
Deadline for applications will be June 1st of each year. The successful applicant of the award will be announced before September 1st. The selection committee will consist of the Research Advisory Council (RAC) of the Aurora Research Institute. The RAC will recommend an applicant for approval to the Board of Governors of Aurora College.

Include the following information:

  1. Copy of acceptance letter from university or college.
  2. Curriculum vitae.
  3. Transcripts of marks.
  4. A brief statement (no more than two pages) of personal and academic objectives which should emphasize how the applicant’s proposed course of studies will contribute to development in the Northwest Territories.
  5. The names and contact information of three references. Only one of these may be an academic reference.
  6. Current and applied-for sources of funding, i.e. scholarships, bursaries, grants or other sources of income must be declared.
