Outreach Program Receives NSERC PromoScience Funding

Today, the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, announced over $9 million in funding for PromoScience grants. These grants support hands-on learning experiences to inspire the next generation of Canadian scientists and researchers. Aurora Research Institute, the research division of Aurora College, was one of 96 successful applicants. With this funding, Annika Trimble, the Outreach Coordinator at the Western Arctic Research Centre (WARC), and Hilary Turko, the Outreach Coordinator at the South Slave Research Centre, will be able to offer engaging and interactive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programming to improve science literacy in the NWT and build on the relationship between traditional and scientific knowledge. ARI is very proud of the work Annika and Hilary do. Congratulations!

Dr. Pertice Moffitt's research featured in the International Journal of Circumpolar Health

The 17th International Congress on Circumpolar Health (ICCH17) met in Copenhagen, Denmark in August 2018. The publication, Ingemann, C., Kvernmo, S., Møller, H., Moffitt, P. M., Tagalik, S., Kuhn, R. L., ... & Larsen, C. V. (2019). Symposium on “parental education” at the ICCH17. International Journal of Circumpolar Health, 78(1), 1604062 provides an overview of research programs presented and discussed at ICCH17 on parental education and maternal health services. Dr. Moffitt and her colleagues conducted a study on integrating traditional knowledge from mother and grandmothers on breastfeeding.

2017 Compendium of Research now available online

The Compendium of Research in the NWT  is an annual publication that offers summaries of research licences/permits that were issued in the Northwest Territories. The information contained in this book is a product of collaboration between the Aurora Research Institute, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The Compendium series began in 1984.

The 2019 conference and general meeting of the Canadian Association of Research Ethics Boards (CAREB-ACCER) is being held in Winnipeg this year. ARI's Jessica Dutton, Manager of Research Ethics and Regional Programs is attending and presenting "An urban and a northern REB perspective on applying Chapter 9 of the TCPS2" with Kenna Miskelly.

Pertice Moffitt Collaborates on CIHR Funded "Welcoming the 'Sacred Spirit' (child)' project

Pertice Moffitt, Manager, Health Research Programs at ARI's North Slave Research Centre is collaborating on a CIHR funded project. Welcoming the 'Sacred Spirit' (child): Connecting Indigenous and Western 'ways of knowing' to inform future policy partnerships to optimize maternal child health service delivery initiatives in remove Canadian regions looks to identify and describe existing maternal supports for Indigenous women in Canada. The project is led by Dr. Kellie Thiessen from the University of Manitoba and Elder Katherine Whitecloud.

ARI's Garfield Giff Celebrated by AGU

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) celebrated 100 years by awarding centennial grants to projects that support engagement activities. ARI's Garfield Giff was awarded a grant to support his work 'Growing Climate Change Awareness Amongst Students.' Garfield and his team inform Northern youth about the effects of climate-driven changes on their environment using fun-filled, entertaining, interactive and informative methods.
