Community Access Program

Funding was obtained under Industry Canada's CAP (Community Access Program) to assist NWT communities with the establishment and sustainability of a CAP site as well as youth training and employment for CAP sites. The funding eventually encompassed our administration of CAP funding for the NWT.

During our involvement with the CAP, many youth had received training and were employed in CAP sites. Many CAP sites were established in most NWT communities. In our most ambitious years, we were able to negotiate funding agreements with aboriginal organizations and GNWT departments to fly many youth from across the NWT to Fort Smith to attend a summer training session. The youth then returned to their home communities to be employed in the CAP site for the duration of the summer. Aurora College was instrumental in our successes with both providing us access to the computer labs for training and in some cases, usage of student accommodations.

The Aurora Research Institute has not been involved with the CAP since 2004, it is now administered by Yellowknife Smart Communities which can be seen at http://www.looknorth.ca/cap.html.
