Projects

Photovoltaics in the North
As part of this project, photovoltaic arrays were installed at the Aurora Research Institute in Inuvik and the Nunavut Research Institute in Iqaluit and the feasibility of PV in the north was assessed as promising.

Distributed generation workshop, February 26-27, 2002, Inuvik, NT
A workshop dealing specifically with DG issues in the N.W.T. The focus of this workshop was on current DG technologies including: PV,  wind, emerging technologies, microturbines, fuel cells, utility policy issues and environmental issues.

Wind Assessment in the Far North
This project studied the feasibility of a wind power generation project in northern communities, specifically in Holman, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, and Tuktoyaktuk, and identified Holman as one of the more promising locations.

Grid Connect of PV arrays at Aurora Research Institute
This project focused on upgrading the existing PV-wind hybrid energy system and connecting it to the NTPC power grid. As part of this project, a hydrogen fuel cell was installed and live monitoring capabilities were developed. Live monitoring data  is now available on-line. Also as part of this project, NTPC’s policy on net generation was explored and a policy making process in this direction was initiated.

Fuel Cell Systems for the Western Arctic
This project studied the technical feasibility of using fuel cells in the far north and the economic feasibility of an integrated wind-hydrogen storage solution for fully grid-independent energy supply in northern communities.
