The NWT is a great place not only for viewing the northern lights, but for studying the high energy particles which cause this beautiful phenomenon. The Aurora Research Institute provides technical and logistical support to several programs involved in better understanding cosmic rays and the northern lights. Since cosmic rays can affect our communications systems, our power grids, and even our weather, being able to better predict their activity patterns and intensity makes this work very important.
