Each year, the Aurora Research Institute (ARI) employs northern students to help provide technical and logistic support to researchers working in the western Arctic. Each student receives a variety of technical and safety training, as well as hand-on experience in a variety of research topics. This program was designed to build capacity in the North by allowing northern students to learn safe and effective research skills from experienced researchers and research technicians.
Students in the past have gained experience and training in a variety of research topics, including geology, limnology, population ecology, hydrology, marine biology, entomology, ornithology, dendrology, nutrition, traditional knowledge, permafrost, carbon cycling, social sciences, and research logistics.
This program has allowed northern students access to research that is occurring in their own backyards: through hands-on practice and training, and extensive interaction with visiting researchers, these young northerners have gained invaluable experience and provided scientists with cultural insights into the North. Feedback from researchers and students has been tremendously positive regarding this program and we are eager to hear from students and researchers alike who are interested in participating.
If you are a student who is interested in working at ARI for the summer, please submit your resume and cover letter to the Government of the NWT Human Resources office in Inuvik. If you are a researcher and would be interested in providing a northern student with hands-on experience in the field or in the lab, please contact the Manager, Inuvik Research Centre.
